NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox Women's softball team defeated the Whitworth Pirates 7-5 in the second of the Saturday games after losing the first by 6-9.
How It Happened – Game One
In the bottom half of the first inning,
Kamryn Potter singled to right field while
Makayla Noone scored a run, giving the Bruins a one run lead. Whitworth tied up the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, the Bruins saw more success, after Noone singles, Potter was hit by a pitch, and Sandifer walked, all done with two outs.
Sharon Tomei then hit a grand slam to right field, extending the Bruins lead to 5-2.
The Pirates worked to catch up in the third, and they did, in fact, score two more runs—5-4. Then, in the top of the fourth inning, they tied the score, making it 5-5. Fox battled for the win when Potter advanced to third and then scored, keeping a one-score lead. Unfortunately, Whitworth wouldn't give up, as they flew ahead four more runs, leaving Fox behind, with a final score of 6-9.
How It Happened – Game Two
Whitworth claimed the first run in the first inning of the game. The second inning was a strong one for Whitworth as they continued to score three more runs, putting the Bruins down 4-0. Fox worked on catching up as
Kiley Harris scored on a passed ball. Next,
Sydney Sandifer singled to left field, and then Sandifer and Potter advanced a base on a fielding error. Off of a Tomei single, Sandifer and Potter both scored runs making the score 4-3 with Whitworth still with a slight lead.
The top half of the fourth inning was scoreless, but in the bottom,
Nicole Campa advanced to third on a wild pitch. Harris pushed the Bruins into the lead with her two run home run. Shortly following, Noone doubled to left field, then Potter drove in Noone, bumping the Bruins lead to two, with a score of 6-4.
Sharon Tomei gave Fox one more run in the top half of the fifth inning. The Pirates tried to keep up as they eventually scored another run in the sixth, but this was not enough as kept Whitworth scoreless in the seventh, earning the win 7-5.
Top Performances
Kiley Harris was one of the top performers making one homer, two runs, two RBIs, two hits, including one double.
Makayla Noone scored three, one triple, one double, and a home run stealing catch in centerfield in game two.
Sharon Tomei had four hits, two of which were home runs, including one grand slam.
What It Means
The Bruins are now 18-12 (11-7 NWC), and Whitworth sits at 11-19 (7-11 NWC).

The Bruins remain at home tomorrow to play two more against the Pirates, the first pitch of game one will be at 11:00 a.m.
