NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Bruins start their season strong with a 6-1 win over The College of Idaho.
How It Happened
Fox began their evening in a dominant fashion, winning all three of their doubles matches. senior
Kalli Wiker and sophomore
Riley Bobkiewicz teamed up against the Coyote's top doubles team, winning the match 6-3.
Sophie Denham and
Cassey Hitch put on a show in the No. 2 doubles spot, winning 6-1 to secure a point for the Bruins.
Shanah Denham and
Arianna Rader started their doubles season on a high note as well, winning their match 6-0.
In singles play, The Bruins continued their good play, winning five of the six matches.
Abigail Bond, Hitch, and So. Denham all won their matches with ease, taking the cake 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-2 respectively. Sh. Denham put up a great fight against the Yotes' number three singles. She battled to the end, pushing the second set to a thrilling 7-6 (7-5) finish, but a 6-2 loss in the first set meant defeat for the sophomore.
Bobkiewicz and Wiker both needed three sets to secure points for the Bruins. Bobkiewicz beat College of Idaho's Berkley Klarich 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, clutching up in the final set to take the victory. Wiker played a fantastic match against Hristina Ljuba, losing the first set 7-6 (10-8) before taking the final two sets 6-0, 6-2.
Coach's Thoughts
"The team played well for the first match out," said Bruins head coach
Rick Cruz. "The energy and focus was there from the beginning which was good to see. Kalli and Riley did a great job of showing toughness and grit by closing out their matches in the third sets. It will be fun to play Portland State next week in an exhibition match."

The Bruins travel to Portland to play an exhibition match at Portland State next Friday, February 7th. The match is slated to begin at 10:00 AM.
