NEWBERG, Ore. – After a tightly contested game with momentum swinging throughout, George Fox fell to Whitman, 4-3, despite a brace from
Isaac Williams.
How It Happened
Both teams came out hungry in an entertaining first half. The Bruins'
Isaac Williams was the first player of the day to find the back of the net.
Matthew Woodard and
Kellin Aguiar worked together to get the ball to Williams, who found an opening in the lower right corner to put the Bruins up 1–0 in just nine minutes thanks to a beautiful play. Whitman made multiple attempts to close the early gap, but the Bruin defense was determined to stay on top. Spearheading the defensive effort was
Chase Nelson, who recorded three saves to help keep the lead locked down for George Fox.
The Bruins weren't satisfied, showing no mercy as they quickly found another opening.
Eugene Peltier booted the ball into a crowd of players off a free kick. Alec Boungervino was in the area, but it was
Quincy Walker who was ready, taking a shot amidst the traffic to put a crooked number on the board for the Bruins and raise the score to 2–0.
Whitman was undeterred, though — In the 34th minute, the Blues found an opening in the lower left corner of the goal to get on the board, 2–1. Just two minutes later, Whitman's Alex Evans added another from outside the 18-yard box to level the match at 2–2. Before the end of the half, the Blues tacked on one more goal off of a free kick to complete the comeback from a two-goal deficit in just seven minutes, taking the lead 3–2 heading into halftime.
Williams came out strong for the Bruins in the second half, netting his second goal of the game to complete the brace and tie the score at 3–3; Williams' goal was on a beautiful cross from
Eugene Peltier, who bombed the ball down the field and found the senior streaking down the far side of the field. Whitman didn't allow the draw to stand for long, though, scoring off of a deflection in the 66th minute to once again take the lead, 4–3.
Raiden Renggli and
Elijah Soon took back-to-back shots in retaliation, but neither was able to find the equalizer. Whitman went on the offensive again in the 76th minute, attempting a shot that could have widened the gap, but new goalkeeper
Patrick O'Brien came through with the save to keep the Bruins within striking distance.
The final two minutes were a scramble for ball control, with the Bruins pushing to net one last goal to level the score and Whitman fighting to defend their lead against a zealous George Fox offense. Unfortunately, the Bruins were unable to equalize before the final whistle and ultimately fell to the Blues, 4–3, in a wild game that saw seven goals.
