WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The George Fox women's golf team completed the Kingsmill Intercollegiate tournament, finishing an impressive third place and a total cumulative score of 888 (+55) among nine Division I teams.
Top Performers
Alison Takamiya finished up the last round of the tournament with a score of 70 (-2) giving her a combined score of 211 (-5) and placing her in second place overall — just one spot back of finish as the medalist in a D-I tournament. Takamiya had seven straight pars in the front nine and a total of three birdies throughout the last round to finish with a round three score of 70 (-2).
Joining her teammate with a score of 70 (-2) in round three was
Makensie Toole, placed in third overall and second for the Bruins with a total score of 213 (-3). Toole started her day with two birdies in the first seven holes, before a one-under back nine that featured seven consecutive pars.
Next up was
Liana Brown, who finished in fourteenth overall with a total score of 226 (+10). Like Toole, Brown started with a birdie en route to a three-birdie day and a final round score of 74 (+2).
Ainsley Carter came in 32nd in the tournament with a score of 238 (+22) thanks to a third-round score of 80 (+8). Carter's lone birdie of the day came on the par-four hole six.
Reyna Naranjo joined her teammate with an 80 (+8), scoring a 247 (+31) overall to put her in 47th place. Naranjo had a total of three birdies over the course of the round, including two in three holes.
Samara D'Silva,
Katelyn Lam, and
Leanne Telle all played as an individual for the Bruins, with D'SIlva finishing in 44th with a 245 (+29), Telle in 50th with a 250 (+35), and Lam in 51st with a 251 (+35).
One year after winning the Division I Saint Martin's Invitational, the Bruins showed they were not in above their heads against Division I competition, nearly grabbing the medalist position as well as the overall win. In three rounds at the Kingsmill Country Club — the same course that the Bruins will play on should they qualify for the NCAA Tournament — Fox shot an 888 (+55), beating out seven D-I teams to finish third.
Radford picked up the team win with a score of 869 (+5), with the Highlanders' Macy Johnson barely edging out Takamiya with an overall score of 210 (-6).
Coach's Thoughts
"It was quite an honor to play in this prestigious tournament," Bruin head coach
MaryJo McCloskey said, "I really want to thank William & Mary for allowing us into their D-I event. Kingsmill is an outstanding venue and will host a phenomenal NCAA National Championship in May."
"I am proud of the team playing 54 holes in two days and giving it their all. Our third-place finish as a team, just five strokes back of Univ of Pennsylvania caught the eye of a lot of people, including other teams. What Alison and Makensie did, shooting rounds under par and finishing second and third was nothing short of spectacular. We sure hope to be back in May for Nationals!"
