PASADENA, Calif. -- The Bruins completed their road trip to California with a 5-2 loss to No. 33 California Institute of Technology.
How It HappenedÂ
The Bruin men's tennis team is like a hungry hamster the way they squeaked out a doubles win.
Jackson Whittaker and
Luis Hernandez were the first to finish up, dropping their match 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles spot. Now down a match and needing to win the other two matches to secure the point, the Bruins turned on the jets and got it done.
Zach Moore and
Keita Shoji found themselves on the losing side of match point, going down 5-4, but managed to avoid defeat and push it to a tie-breaker. They never looked back as they tied things up with a 7(7) - 6(5) victory in the No. 2 doubles spot. This set the stage for
Lars Schmassmann and
Ikuho Ebisu as the duo battled it out in the No. 1 spot. The match went to yet another tie-breaker, and the Bruins got it done again with a 7(7) - 6(4) victory to give the Bruins their first point of the day.Â
Cal Tech struck back immediately to start the singles matches, as Shoji dropped his No. 3 match 6-1, 6-1. Shmassmann made quick work of his opponent soon after, dominating Constanin Cedillo-Vayson De Pradenne in the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-4 to give the Bruins their second point of the afternoon. Whittaker came in next, dropping the No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match up at 2 a piece.Â
The rest of the matches needed a full three sets to finish the day, as the Bruins couldn't quite close out the victory. Hernandez won his first set 6-3, but dropped his next two 6-3, 6-1 to put the Beavers one match away from victory.
Zach Moore battled hard for the Bruins, winning set one 6-3 and taking a 4-1 lead into set two. His opponent, Andrew Zabelo, ended up coming back to win the set 7-5, and took set three 6-2 to secure the victory for the Beavers. Ebisu saw lots of extra tennis today, as all three of his sets saw a seventh game. He lost 5-7, 7-6, 5-7 to cap off a thrilling day of tennis for the Bruins.Â
