Maxfield's Hat Trick Not Enough as Bruins Fall to Sewanee

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season 19-8 against the Sewanee Tigers.

How It Happened
The first quarter was slow for the Bruins—the Tigers made their first two goals within ten minutes, but Fox gained control of the ball eventually as Morgan Maxfield pushed to the center and scored a goal to make it 1-2. The Tigers reacted with another goal, but a few minutes later, Maxfield made another goal, attempting to even the score. In the last three minutes, Sewanee began to gain momentum with two more goals, and with the remaining 25 seconds, Ava Bluhm attempted a wide shot at the goal, but then scored a goal, advancing the score 3-5.

The first four minutes of the second quarter were quiet until the Tigers scored three consecutive goals. Eventually, Maxfield scored a goal after a flawless pass from Bluhm with less than three minutes left. Sewanee recorded a shot seconds later, but Fox wasn't giving up as Merrick Gibson picked up the ball and found the back of the net. With 14 seconds on the clock, Lana Davis snuck in a solid goal—going into halftime 9-6.

Fox didn't manage to score any goals in the third quarter which gave the Tigers a tremendous advantage—the Bruins were down 6-15. In the final quarter, Sewanee scored a goal within the first 45 seconds, but Fox still gave it their all as Davis scored to make it 7-17. The score wasn't in the Bruins' favor, but Gibson scored a goal on a free-position shot, and then in the last 31 seconds, Bluhm scored the final goal of the night, 9-18.
