Bruins Cruise to Blowout of Loggers

NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox University women's lacrosse team took the lead early against the University of Puget Sound Loggers, and never relinquished it, winning 19-3 after leading for virtually the entire game.

How It Happened
It took GFU just 39 seconds to get the first goal of the game, as Sasha Thayer fed Claire Abraham for the opening goal that gave George Fox the 1-0 lead. Morgan Maxfield added a pair of goals at the 11 and 10-minute marks of the first quarter to push the Bruins lead to 3-0. Just over 20 seconds after Maxfield's second goal, Abraham picked up her second goal, making the score 4-0 early on. The Loggers scored their first goal of the day with just under nine minutes to go in the first, but fortunately for the Bruins, it was wedged in between two goals from Ava Bluhm that made the score 6-1, Fox. Morgan Maxfield scored her third goal of the quarter with three minutes left in the frame, making the score 7-1 at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.

Bluhm opened up the second quarter's scoring with an unassisted goal early in the second quarter, and Lana Davis scored her first goal of the day two minutes later to make the score 9-1 with 11:40 left in the second. Thayer got a goal on a power play less than a minute later, and Maxfield scored her fourth goal of the first half after that to push the lead for GFU to ten goals, 11-1. Davis scored again with a little over six minutes left, and Ana Newkirk scored a goal two minutes later to drive the lead up to 13-1. Abraham added one last goal at the end of the quarter, making the score at the end of the first half 14-1, with GFU in complete control. The Bruins had 21 shots on goal in the first half alone and forced 14 Logger's turnovers; scoring off of three intercepted pass attempts from the Logger's goalie.

The Bruins slowed up the pace in the second half - knowing they had the running clock and a large lead, they focused on holding possession and hounding the Loggers defensively. The Bruins forced eight Logger's turnovers in the quarter and grabbed six ground balls. UPS scored an early goal, to which Davis responded, scoring a goal off an assist from Bluhm. With 6:25 left in the quarter, Maxfield fed Bluhm for her fourth goal of the day. Toward the end of the quarter, Audrey White scored an unassisted goal that gave Fox a 17-2 lead that they carried into the fourth quarter.

31 seconds into the fourth quarter, Davis scored her fourth goal – making her one of three Bruins to score four goals, overall the Bruins had seven goal scorers in the game. Not long after, Merrick Gibson scored her first goal of the day, giving the Bruins a 19-2 lead with 12 minutes left in the quarter. The Loggers scored the final goal of the game with just over three minutes in the game, setting up the final score of 19-3. The Bruins totaled 29 shots on goal, picked up 26 ground balls, and caused 19 turnovers.
