PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Among some of the nation's top teams at the national preview the George Fox women's golf team got their feet wet, breaking in several newcomers. After round one, the Bruins sit in 14th after a team score of 321 (+33).
Top Performers
Katelyn Lam was the top finishing Bruin in the preview—the sophomore totaled 37 (+1) on the front nine, and a 77 (+5) overall, with one birdie on the par five seventh hole to move her up to 52nd place. Next up was
Reyna Naranjo, who had a clean slate with one stroke less on the back nine than the front, to start with a score of 41 (+5). Naranjo's final score of day one was 81 (+9) on the back nine—good for 70th place.
Abby Mattelski started her career at Fox with a mark of 42 (+6) on the front nine, and 81 (+9) on the back. Mattelski finished the day with one birdie on hole 12, tying Naranjo's position in 70th. Meanwhile,
Ashlyn Johnson finished her round just behind her teammate with a score of 82 (+10) overall.
Sophomore
Samara D'Silva rounded out the scoring five for Fox with 43 (+7) on the front nine, finishing with 84 (+12) at seven bogeys and one birdie total. Finally, to end the night well, Sophia Itziar Ayesa competed as an individual and tied with Naranjo, totalling 81 (+9) for the night.
As a team, the Bruins placed 14th for the day with a 321 (+33) in round one. For many of the Bruins, it was their first action as a part of the scoring five at a national-caliber event. Carnegie Mellon leads the 15 teams competing with a score of 281 (-7), with the Tartans' Emma Wong leading the way with a 69 (-3).
What Happens Next
The Bruins will stay in Palm Desert, continuing the National Fall Preview for another game on Sunday, September 14. The first tee time for Fox will be at 8:00 am.
