Fox Hanging Tough in Division II Tournament

DuPONT, Wash. -- The George Fox women's golf team tied for seventh place on the competitive first day of the Division II Saint Martin's Invitational with an overall score of 314 (+26).

Top Performers
Ashlyn Johnson led the Bruins, ending day one in 13th place; overall, she finished with a score of 75 (+3), with three birdies and scoring a 34 (-2) on the front nine. Abby Matelski also tied for 13th place, finishing with a nearly clean slate thanks to 15 pars. On the front nine, Matelski ended with 38 (+2), but improved on the back nine with a score of 37(+1). The two came out strong for the first day of the invitational, and are looking to gain the upper hand on day two. 

Samara D'Silva came out in third for the Bruins and tied for 43rd with a final score of 81 (+9) overall after a day with two birdies. On the front nine she finished 39 (+3) before a 42 (+6) on the back. Kateyln Lam finished with a mark of 83 (+11) for 46th place. Sofia Itziar Ayesa contended as an individual for the Bruins to finish off the day. She scored a total of 84 (+12).

As a team, George Fox finished the day in a tie for 7th place with a total score of 314 (+26), but are already looking to finish strong as the only Division III team in a D-II field Simon Fraser is currently in first place with an overall score of 293 (+5). Individually, the Red Leafs' Izzy Ferguson leads the field after a 70 (-2) first round. 

What Happens Next
The Bruins will stay in DuPont, Wash. to compete in the second day of the Saint Martin's Invitational. Round two will be Tuesday, September 22.
