HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference office announced its Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of February 3 through Feb 9, with
Aiden Cruz and
Sophia Hardy earning the weekly honor.
Cruz helped George Fox win their first conference match of the season against Lewis & Clark, taking down Wade McDermott in the No. 5 singles matchup and winning handily in two sets, 6-2, 6-4. Cruz was also instrumental in securing the doubles point, teaming up with
Zach Moore in the No. 2 doubles match in a decisive 6-3 victory. In the Bruins' first regular-season contest, despite the loss, the freshman found himself up against DI opponent Portland State, pushing the No. 3 singles challenger, Ignacio Ruiz, to the brink in a close loss of 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
Playing the game down two regular starters, Sophia was sure to help the Bruins take down Lewis & Clark in their lone matchup of the week. The junior was perfect from the field, shooting 7-7, to score 17 points in the game. In addition, Hardy pulled down seven rebounds to help Fox beat the Otts, 75-66.
Hardy and the women's basketball team will be driving up to Walla Walla, Wash. this weekend to compete against Whitman on Friday, February 13, with the opening tip starting at 5:30 p.m. After this week's hiatus, Cruz and the men's tennis team will face off against the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday, February 21, starting at 3:00 p.m.
