Johnson Leads the Way After Day One of Willamette Valley Cup

SALEM, Ore. -- The George Fox women's golf team concluded the first day of the Willamette Valley Cup in a dominant first place, 310 (+26), in their second tournament of the spring.

Top Performances
After an incredible first day on the green, Ashlyn Johnson not only paved the way for the Lady Bruins, but sits in first place overall with a solid score of 74 (+3). Johnson found success immediately with a birdie on hole one and continued to succeed into the back nine with another birdie. Kateyln Lam followed closely behind Johnson in score and placement; with a 75 (+4), Lam concluded the first day in a tie for second place with most of her progress recorded in the back nine. After scoring birdies on holes 13 and 18, Lam finished the back nine three under par. 

Next up for GFU was Reyna Naranjo who ended the day with a total of 80 (+9); after a consistent day, Naranjo finished in a tie for seventh place. Samara D'Silva came next with two birdies on the front nine — holes four and six — which led her to tie for tenth with a 81 (+10). Rounding off the score for Fox was Abby Matelski; finishing in a tie for 14th, Matelski shot a 82 (+11). 

For team play, George Fox took first place at the end of the first day of competition; not only did they finish in first, but they were ahead of highly ranked teams such as No. 22 Lewis-Clark State, No. 48 Lewis & Clark, and No. 43 Pacific. Individually, GFU had two top place finishers with Johnson coming out on top in first and Lam not far behind in second. 

What Happens Next
The Lady Bruins will continue playing at Creekside Golf Course for their second and final day of the Willamette Valley Cup on Sunday, March 15; tee times are still to be determined.
