SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The George Fox women's lacrosse team played their second game spent in Tennessee against the Sewanee Tigers—losing, 11-14, in a back-and-forth battle for the wi.
How It Happened
Sewanee took the first goal seven minutes in—but the ensuing draw control was impressively won quickly by
Alli Stilp, taking it far for the Bruins.
Claire Abraham took a shot that was saved by the Tiger's goalie before a turnover ended in another goal for Sewanee, with Fox calling a timeout to gather themselves from the 2-0 score.
However, Sewanee kept control of the ball with a ground ball pickup, resulting in another goal with five minutes left in the first quarter. The Tigers won the draw control, but Fox took over as
Lana Davis picked it up. A free-position kick was in motion, as
Anna Newkirk launched the ball at the net, locking in the Bruins' first goal of the game—3-1.
With two minutes remaining, Stilp passed the ball to
Ava Bluhm, who shot at the goal, marking another point for Fox just like that—catching up with a score of 3-2. The Tigers tried to grab back the power by winning the next draw control and swinging at the net, but they missed multiple times as the clock ran out of time.
The Lady Bruins fought back in the second period as
Audrey White scored a free-position goal, tying the score 3-3, and then Davis scored after winning the draw control and weaving it around the heavy defense in the next minute. Then, just over a minute later, Davis was on fire, making yet another goal on a free-position kick.
With plenty of time left under ten minutes, Fox was ahead 5-3 thanks to four straight goals , but Sewanee countered with a goal of their own. Davis won the following draw control, and the ball went back-and-forth for a few minutes, but the Tigers managed to tie the score 5-5 with a shot in the net, and then another one another minute later.
Davis picked up the ground ball when she got the chance, and stormed the defense strongly, tying the score once again 6-6. The game the turned to a defensive battle as the Bruins held Sewanee to just one goal over the next 10 minutes.
However, Fox matched their energy when Stilp scored strikingly—the Tigers won draw control, but the Bruins were on a roll, as Fox stole the ball and
Sasha Thayer found the back of the net, taking an 8-7 lead into the final period.
After a Tiger goal to start the fourth, the Bruin offense was active for the Bruins, as
Naomi Rauch scored a goal, putting her team ahead, 9-8. However, the Tigers made a five-goal run over the course of the next nine minutes to change the tides of the game. In the final two minutes,
Merrick Gibson took a swing at the net, missing wide, but made her shot quickly followed by a goal by Abraham.
The score was close—13-11, but draw control was won over by the Sewanee, as they flung the ball into the net with just thirty seconds remaining—not nearly enough time for the Bruins to catch up and snatch the victory. As the buzzer rang, Fox accepted the loss with the score at 14-11 for the day.
