Bruins Head to California, Sit in Lead After Day One of Santa Cruz Invite

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. -- Day one was strong for the George Fox women's golf team as they competed at the Santa Cruz Invite, tying in first place with Claremont -Mudd-Scripps at a total score of 305 (+17).

Top Performances
Katelyn Lam started the day, claiming a birdie on the fourth of the front nine and finishing the first half with a 38 (+1) score. She was able to smooth out the back nine with another birdie in the sixteenth, with a 37 (+2)—totaling a strong 75 (+3). 

After Lam was Reyna Naranjo, meeting her score of 75 (+3) but getting one birdie on the eighth, both of the Bruins tying for seventh overall. 

Next, Abby Matelski did well on the front nine, also with a birdie and a marking of 38 (+1), and then finishing the overall round with a 77 (+5), claiming three birdies. 

Samara D'Silva followed right behind her with a front nine of 40 (+3), cleaning up on the back nine with a 38 (+3)—overall claiming 78 (+6) with one birdie and two bogeys. 

Then, Ashlyn Johnson had a 43 (+6) on the first half and a 43 (+8) on the back nine. Her round totaled out to 86 (+14), with one birdie from tenth. The Bruins performed well on the first day, locking in a good placement for the day. As a team, Fox tied with the number nine Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, shooting a 305 (+17) as a team.

What Happens Next
The Bruins will start day two of the Santa Cruz Invite tomorrow on Sunday, March 29, ready to keep their winning spot. The Bruins are schedueld to tee off at 9:30 am.
