Fox Slips to Fourth Overall in California, Naranjo Shoots to Fourth Place

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. -- The George Fox women's golf team closed out day two of the Santa Cruz Invite, tying Cal Lutheran in fourth place. The day's total was 316 (+28), with a total team score from both days coming out to 621 (+45).

Top Performances
Reyna Naranjo stayed consistent in the front nine, with a birdie on the eighth. It was around the same results on the back nine, with one birdie on the 12th, ending with a solid personal total of 76 (+4). For individual standings, she finished sixth in a five-way tie with a 151 (+7).  

Abby Matelski tied Naranjo in with a  She claimed a birdie in the ninth to end the front with a 37 (+4), and in the back nine; she got another birdie on the 10th. Though she tied Naranjo with her day two score, she finished eight spots behind her teammate in 14th overall with a 153 (+9).

Katelyn Lam hit a birdie of her own in the eighth, tying Matelski at the end of the front nine. She finished her second day with an overall score of 81 (+9). For the tournament, Lam finished in 21st position with a 156 (+12).

Samara D'Silva also recorded a birdie early on, tallying it on the second hole, and finished her day with a 83 (+11); D'Silva finished in 36th place overall thanks to a score of 161 (+17). Ashlyn Johnson rounded out the Bruins with an 84 (+12) on day two, earning a 58th place finish with a composite 170 (+26). 

As a team, the Bruins slipped from a tie for first to a tie for fourth amid a stacked field. Fox shot a 316 (+28), with a total team score from both days coming out to 621 (+45). Overall, top 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won with a score of 603, while Redlands' Savanah Christenson was the medalist with a score of 146 (+2).

Coach's Thoughts
"Grateful to have the opportunity to be tied for the lead going into the final round," Bruin head coach MaryJo McCloskey, "Shows our improvement as a team playing  Against some top teams. We didn't get the victory today, but this young team is learning, growing, and moving forward! We are looking forward to the spring classic."

What Happens Next
The Bruins will travel to Tacoma, Wash., for the Northwest Conference Spring Classic from April 4-5.
