Back-to-Back Wins for Bruins After 7-0 Sweep Over Loggers

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fox closed their weekend at home with a handy win against the Puget Sound Loggers, 7-0, marking the Bruins' fourth straight win this season.

How It Happened
The Bruins secured the doubles point within the first two finishes of the doubles matches today. Sophie Denham teamed up with Juhree Kizziar on Court No. 2 to take the first victory for Fox, 6-2, scoring five straight to begin the frame. For the solidifying victory, Riley Bobkiewicz and Shanah Denham partnered in a tight finish. The match was tied 4-4, and the Bruins willed the next two games to make it a 6-4 result, giving the Bruins the overall lead.

Nicole Schnurbusch and Audrey Gardner took on Puget Sound's No. 3 competitors in the final doubles contest. The Bruins' 4-2 lead was thwarted by the Loggers, preventing the sweep in a 6-4 loss.

Singles action began with So. Denham sailing past her opponent in two sets (6-0, 6-0) on Court No. 3, while her sibling Sh. Denham etched a win of her own, taking down the No. 2 competitor, Frances English, swiftly (6-2, 6-0). Kizziar kept the win streak going for Fox on Court No. 4, winning set one in dominant fashion, 6-0, and capturing set two 6-2 after leading 3-2 and never looking back.

Bobkiewicz, meanwhile, held down Court No. 1 for the Bruins. The junior found herself tied 2-2 and later 5-5 in set one, but with incredible poise, she edged out two more games to seal a 7-5 victory. In set two, she again faced a familiar 2-2 score early on, but carried herself to a 6-3 win, giving the Bruins their fourth singles point of the day.

In the battle of No. 5 players, Gardner took the lead in set one, 6-2, before dropping a close second set, 6-4, leading to the final tiebreaker set. The freshman created a six-point margin to eventually defeat Pearl Buck 10-4, leaving one match left for the Bruins.

Schnurbusch started from behind on Court No. 6, losing set one 6-2, followed by a defensive recovery in set two, allowing 0 games against her in the 6-0 win. Her momentum carried into the tiebreaker set, as the sophomore finished the singles sweep for Fox, winning 10-4.

Abby Gonzales appeared in an exhibition match for the Bruins, giving it her all against Ella Norman of Puget Sound, but ultimately falling 8-4.

What It Means
After today's win, George Fox moves to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the Northwest Conference. Puget Sound falls to 2-11 overall and 1-9 in conference.

Coach's Thoughts
"After an amazing trip to Orlando, the girls played great this weekend," said Bruin head coach Rick Cruz. "We had to win both, and we did. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the final couple of weeks of the season!"

What Happens Next
George Fox women's tennis will take to the road and head to Washington to face off against the Whits, starting weekend play against Whitworth in Spokane on April 3. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
