Fox in Fourth After Day One of Star-Studded Westbrook Invite

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The George Fox women's golf team hosted their annual highly-competitive Westbrook Invitational, where they ended the first day in fourth place with a score of 307 (+28), right on the heels of several top teams. 

Top Performances
Abby Matelski led the way for the No. 28-ranked Lady Bruins after having a consistent day overall; she ended the first day in a tie for fifth with an overall score of 73 (+2). In the front nine, Matelski recorded a birdie on hole four, and continued to succeed into the back nine with another birdie while also ending even (E). Ashlyn Johnson was next for GFU, right behind Matelski with a 74 (+3); Johnson recorded one birdie for the day on hole ten and ended in ninth place.

Following not long after was Samara D'Silva and Katelyn Lam, where they both tied for 26th with a score of 80 (+9). They each recorded one birdie overall with D'Silva's on hole three and Lam's on hole eight. Rounding off the Bruin's score was Reyna Naranjo with a 83 (+12); in a tie for 39th, Naranjo also recorded one birdie for the day on the fourth hole. 

For team play, No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps ended the day in the lead with an overall score of 284 (E). CMS's Alisa Chang took first on day one for individual play with a 68 (-3). In total, seven of the nine teams competing are ranked in the top 30. The Bruins are currently ahead of No. 19 Trinity (Texas), No. 26 Arizona Christian (an NAIA team), and No. 22 Illinois Wesleyan.

What Happens Next
The Lady Bruins will conclude the Westbrook Invitational on Sunday, March 8. The team looks to continue and improve on their second day of competition, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 am.
