SPOKANE, Wash. -- The George Fox women's lacrosse team got it done against the Whitworth Pirates, pulling out an impressive 18-6 win.
How It Happened
Two minutes into the game,
Claire Abraham started the Bruins' day off right with a goal off of an assist by
Merrick Gibson. Seconds later, Gibson picked up a ground ball, handing it off to
Ava Bluhm, who assisted
Sasha Thayer for Fox's second goal of the game. Gibson then scored in the 11th minute to put GFU up 3-0. The Pirates countered with a run of their own, scoring three goals over the course of the next eight minutes to tie the game, 3-3. Bluhm closed out the period with a goal in the final 30 seconds, giving the Bruins a slight lead, 4-3.
The second period was the biggest one for Fox, as the Bruins outshot the Pirates 14-2 and outscored Whitworth 9-0. Bluhm scored her second goal, while
Lana Davis got on the board, scoring her first. Gibson, Abraham, and Bluhm scored the next three.
Alli Stilp and Abraham scored on a free position shot in the seventh and third minutes. Davis and Stilp both scored again with a minute left, ending the first half firmly in control, 13-3.
Thayer started the third with a goal assisted by Davis. Whitworth responded, scoring just a minute later. The Bruins and Pirates went back and forth, taking their turns at shots before Davis was successful in the seventh minute, making it 15-4.
Bluhm assisted Gibson, kicking off the final period. The Pirates immediately followed with a goal.
Naomi Rauch scored for the Bruins in the eighth minute, Whitworth following yet again, with one of their own. Gibson closed out the game with another goal, giving the Bruins the whopping 18-6 win.

Merrick Gibson had four goals and two caused turnovers.
Lana Davis scored three goals, had three caused turnovers, four assists, and led the team in 10 draw controls.
Ava Bluhm had three goals and three draw controls.
Claire Abraham had three goals and three ground balls.
Alli Stilp and
Sasha Thayer each had two goals, and
Naomi Rauch had one.
Lily Glos led with four ground balls and caused turnovers. Kat Ellet earned the win in goal for Fox, recording two saves in 30 minutes in the goal.
What It Means
The Bruins are 2-1 on the season, while the Pirates are 0-2. Though the two teams are Northwest Conference foes, the game is a nonconference competition and does not count towards conference standings.

The Bruins will travel down south to compete against the second half of the Whits, Whitman, on Sunday, March 8th, at 1:00 pm.
