NEWBERG, Ore. — The Bruins men's tennis team opened up their weekend with a challenging 5-2 loss against the Whitworth Pirates.

The Bruins' men's tennis team gave it their all in a difficult loss to Whitworth at home. Fox controlled the doubles courts and looked poised to take control of the day.
Zach Moore stood tall on Court No. 1 in singles to bring home the Bruins' lone singles win on the day.
Doubles matches began with a solid 6-3 victory on Court No. 1 by Moore and
Aiden Cruz, leading into a larger victory for the No. 3 matchup for
Luis Hernandez and
Joseph Vece in a 6-2 win. To close doubles,
Ikuho Ebisu and
Keita Shoji went back and forth on Court No. 2, eventually prevailing 6-4, which secured the Bruins' doubles point victory in a full sweep.
In singles, Moore won his sets 6-2, 6-1 to give the Bruins their second and final point of the day. This match came after a loss for
Joseph Vece on Court No. 6, losing set one 6-0 and nearly mounting a comeback in a 6-4 loss.
In a similar story, Hernandez fell in his first set 6-2 before losing in set two 6-4, fighting till the last serve. Shoji combined for five game wins between both sets in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to give the Pirates the 3-2 lead, putting emphasis on the final two matches of the day.
Ebisu entered set two after a close 6-4 loss and was tied 6-6 against Matt Froslan until Froslan won the tiebreak 7-4, clinching the victory for the Pirates.
The final match of the day featured Cruz up against the No. 4 singles competitor, capturing set one decisively 7-5 and losing set two 6-3, with another loss in the tiebreaker set 10-2, finalizing the 5-2 win for Whitworth.
What it means
With today's match result, the Bruins now move down to 7-8 overall and 6-5 in the Northwest Conference on the season. Whitworth rises to 10-5, 9-2 in conference.
