NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's soccer team came away with a close 1-0 loss in their first home game of the season, dropping the game against the Lewis & Clark River Otters.
How It Happened
The first half was truly one of defense for both teams. Throughout the first 45 minutes, the Otters were able to sneak in a few shots, but thanks to GFU's locked down defense, the ball was kept far away from the back of the net. While Lewis & Clark made moves on the field, they definitely weren't the only ones. Paving the way for the Bruins' defense was
Lindsey Kong; after fighting her way to the net, Kong aimed a solid shot at the bottom left corner, but the ball was quickly saved to end the half, 0-0.
This time around, Lewis & Clark was quick to put their offense in motion. An Otter corner kick triggered their attack and it was only a few seconds later that they snuck in a goal to give Lewis & Clark the first lead of the game, 1-0. It didn't take long until L&C was showing off their offense again, but this time around goalkeeper
Myann Johansen was there to shut down any River Otter momentum.
Over the course of the second half, the Lady Bruins were ready to put up a fight. At the 55 minute mark, a shot from
Erin Lam to the bottom left was just in reach of the goalkeeper's hands, while Maddilan Twichell sent a hard shot in the sixth minute that was also saved. Despite George Fox's offensive attempts, the River Otters took the game, 1-0.
Top Performances
The Bruins had many players compete and fought the entire 90 minute game including defenders
Morgan Phalen and
Sarah Burkes. Along with them, goalkeeper
Myann Johansen also played the entire game while also recording one save. Offensively,
Lindsey Kong and
Maddie Twichell both ended the night with one shot on goal each.
What It Means
The River Otters rise to 1-2-2 (1-1-0 NWC) while the Bruins fall to 1-3-0 (0-2-0 NWC).
What Happens Next
Fox will head to Tacoma, Wash. for their next contest against Puget Sound on Saturday, September 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:45 pm.
