NEWBERG, Ore. — The George Fox women's soccer team fell to Linfield, 2-0, after a highly defensive game.
How It Happened
It didn't take long for the Lady Bruins to show up on the offensive end. In the fourth minute, a bottom left shot from
Maddie Twichell was close to sneaking in, but the Wildcats' goalkeeper was quickly there for an unfortunate save. However, Linfield made sure to answer back with their own offensive aggression; in the seventh minute, the 'Cats took a top right shot, but GFU goalkeeper
Marisa Lam was there to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net, 0-0.
While the Bruins were able to shut down any offensive rally for a while, the 'Cats only continued to apply pressure. It took until the 21 minute mark that the Wildcats were able to get on the board after slipping in a goal to give them a 1-0 lead. Their offense was far from finished however; during the final minutes of the game, Linfield doubled the gap in score with yet another goal, 2-0.
Once again, the Bruins were able to record a few shots of their own, but the Wildcats only continued their steady offensive aggression. While they were able to get shots on goal in both the 65th and 83rd minute, Lam was there to retaliate and keep the 'Cats from scoring any more for the rest of the game, leading to a 2-0 Linfield win.
Top Performances
Throughout the competition, many Bruins played the entire 90 minute game including
Lindsey Kong,
Morgan Phalen,
Sarah Burkes, and
Erin Lam. Each player fought hard on defense to keep the Wildcats offense in check. Goalkeeper
Marisa Lam also played the whole game while also securing three saves. Offensively,
Maddie Twichell,
Mia Kalina, and Phalen each had shots throughout the game with Twichell recording the only shot on goal for GFU.
What It Means
The 'Cats rise to 4-3-1 (2-2-0 NWC) while Fox falls to 1-5-1 (0-4-1 NWC).
What Happens Next
The Lady Bruins will travel to Spokane, Wash. for their next match-up against Whitworth on Saturday, October 3. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:45 pm.
