With your participation in athletics at George Fox University, you are expected to make yourself available to interviews with the media, both local and from your hometown. Interview requests are required to be set up and coordinated through the Sports Information Office in advance. If a reporter requests an interview, you will be contacted by the Sports Information Director or by your coach.
You may either contact the reporter on your own or you may work through the Sports Information Office to schedule an interview. Please note that the Sports Information Office cannot release your phone number or your email address to any media member.
In-person interviews should be conducted in Wheeler Sports Center and a member of the Sports Information staff will be present. Phone interviews can be conducted on your own, or you may make the call from the Sports Information Office. Interviews can also be conducted 10 minutes after competitions without prior notice.
As a student-athlete at George Fox University, you have a responsibility to cooperate with the media. You are public role models and public figures by virtue of your participation in the University’s athletics program. What you do is of interest to the fans of George Fox’s teams and the people in your hometown who are interested in intercollegiate athletics. People look up to you. Along with this responsibility is the fact that you must be careful; about what you do and what you say away from the practice and playing field. You always represent your team and George Fox University.
-
Be courteous. | Be confident. | Be prompt.
-
Set the ground rules right away. If you have to get treatment for an injury, attend class or have an appointment, tell the reporter you have “X” amount of time.
-
Dress appropriately. What you wear can give an impression that reflects on the entire athletics department. Do not wear clothing from other schools to an in-person or online interview.
-
Never agree to a phone interview unless the interview has been arranged by the Sports Information Office.
-
Be human. Allow reporters to see and learn of other things outside of your athletic team role. They add depth to your story and often help “sell” you as a feature story to a reporter.
-
Don’t fidget. Look the interviewer in the eyes. Speak slowly and clearly. Do not use phrases like “you know” or “like I said before.”
-
There is no such thing as “off the record” with a reporter. Assume that anything you say to a reporter can end up in print or on the Web.
-
Thank the reporter after the interview. Remember, it is a privilege to be a George Fox student-athlete. Be gracious when given the opportunity to highlight your university, your team, and yourself.
The Sports Information Office is responsible for providing accurate statistics for all of George Fox University’s NCAA athletics teams and reporting those statistics to the Northwest Conference and NCAA.
Student-athletes who wish to question a specific statistical decision from a game must do so through their head coach. Per NWC and NCAA policy, all change requests must be submitted in writing within one week after the conclusion of a contest. Change requests to statistics involving judgement calls (i.e. hit or error) must have clear video evidence to support a change and should be submitted within 24 hours.
If there is question on a statistical decision from an away game, the Sports Information Office must request a change to that school’s sports information office. That person’s decision is final and changes cannot be made without their approval.
Questions involving general statistics questions (i.e. what constitutes an assist, etc.) may be addressed to the Sports Information Office directly via email.
