GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES
From time to time, a student-athlete may believe that a member of the Athletics Department, including the coaching staff, has treated him or her unfairly or that a policy or procedure has been administered in a detrimental manner to the student-athlete. The athletic department uses a “Matthew 18” formula for solving such grievances.
One: Keep the matter confidential. The very pattern of sharing the problem only with those directly involved establishes the principle of confidentiality. The first step and most often the only step needed in solving a person-to-person problem is for one of the two people involved to initiate face-to-face dialogue. Most problems are solved at the two-people level. A face-to-face meeting is required, unless either party has a concern for his or her well-being or safety.
Two: Be straightforward. Jesus tells us to be forthright and to love honestly. Sometimes it is difficult to be straightforward and tell someone the very heart of the matter. But restoration and improvement can only come when the issues are lovingly, yet clearly, presented.
Three: Involve Head Coach or Athletic Administration. Failing a satisfactory resolution in a face-to-face dialogue, the student-athlete should appeal the issue to the next higher authority within the Athletic Department that is not a party to the grievance (e.g., Head Coach, Associate Director of Athletics or Director of Athletics). When appropriate, the student-athlete should attempt to schedule an in-person meeting to discuss the issue. The party receiving the appeal should attempt to respond to the appeal request within 10 days.
Four: Follow University Policy. Student-athletes are encouraged to review the policies and procedures of the University. At any time, a student-athlete may pursue other steps set forth in University policy.
If a student has a question or complaint related to gender equity or any minority or discrimination issues, he/she should contact Katrina Johnson.
