PORTLAND, Ore. - With their inside duo of Katy Campbell and
Melissa Marek-Farris combining for 27 points and 16 rebounds in a
defensive battle, the George Fox University Bruins made it two wins
in a row to start the young season with a 50-34 victory over the
Warner Pacific College Knights in a non-conference women's
basketball game Saturday night here at C.C. Perry Gym.
The first half was in itself a tale of two halves. The Bruins
dominated the first 11 minutes of the game, building a 13-0 lead
behind six points from Marek-Farris, who wound up with 12 in all in
the half. The Knights missed everything until Karissa Boyd, who
played for George Fox from 2004-06, sank a three-pointer from the
left wing with 8:49 left in the period. Warner Pacific closed
within two points at 21-19 when Sally Brown hit a fallaway three
from the right corner, was fouled, and hit the free throw for a
four-point play at 1:46, but neither team scored the rest of the
half.
Campbell scored the first five points of the second half,
igniting an 11-2 George Fox run that gave the Bruins a 33-22 lead
with 11 minutes left in the game. The Knights finally got going
again behind Kara Kasch, who had three buckets in the lane in an
8-2 spurt that cut the Bruin lead to three at 33-30 with eight
minutes remaining. Campbell hit two more baskets and Kali Ramey two
driving layups and a free throw, however, sparking a 17-4 run by
the Bruins over the final eight minutes that sealed the contest.
The defensive efforts by both teams were apparent as the Bruins
shot only .380 (19-50) from the field while the Knights struggled
even more, hitting only .264 (14-53). The Knights made 14 steals
and the Bruins 12, with George Fox making 27 turnovers and Warner
Pacific committing 26.
Marek-Farris led all scorers with 14 points and had six
rebounds, while Campbell posted a double-double of 13 points and 10
boards. Ramey added 12 points, and Tiffany Behary contributed a
career-high nine rebounds as the Bruins held a 45-33 rebounding
advantage. B.B. Gardner and Mandee Spotts had three assists apiece
for the Bruins, and Elise Kuenzi made four steals.
Kasch was the only Knight in double figures with 12 points,
while Lindsey Wells was the top rebounder with five. Destiny Schang
had three assists.
George Fox (2-0) heads for San Antonio, Texas, next weekend to
play in the Trinity University Thanksgiving Classic
Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 24-25. The Bruins will meet tournament host
Trinity at 4:00 p.m. Central time (2:00 p.m. Pacific) on Saturday,
then play St. Mary's College of Indiana on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
