9/8 - PACIFIC COAST CLASSIC: Bruins Finish Non-League Play by Splitting Two Tourney Games

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Completing the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 5-2 record, the George Fox University Bruins split their final two games in the Pacific Coast Classic women's volleyball tournament Saturday here at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges' Ducey Gym, falling 3-1 (19-30, 22-30, 30-21, 24-30) to Haverford College before sweeping Claremont-Mudd Scripps 3-0 (32-30, 30-28, 30-27).

Unbeaten Haverford used a 10-0 run to break open a close first game with the Bruins, moving out to a comfortable 28-15 advantage before finishing off the win,and used a 9-2 start to seize control early in the second game. The Bruins collected 18 kills and hit .316 to win game three, but dropped to .048 in dropping the final game to the Fords.

Jennifer Panico had 13 kills and Elizabeth Anderson 12 for the Bruins, and Amy Batchelder had 35 assists. Panico paced the defense with 17 digs, Batchelder had 16, and Jenna Dohren collected 12. The Bruins also had 10 blocks, with Anderson and Sarah Crossfield contributing to five each.

Rebecca Salvo had 18 kills for the Fords, Rachel Salvo added 12, and K'Lynn Slt had 10. Emily Hinchcliff passed out 45 assists. Rachel Salvo had a match-high 21 digs, followed by Laura Nuyen with 16, Rebecca Salvo with 12, and Hinchcliff with 10, as Haverford improved to 7-0.

Against host CMS, the Bruins forged a six-point lead at 23-17, lost it all in falling behind 29-26, then rallied to pull out the first game, setting the tone for the entire match. Game two saw the Bruins jump ahead 19-11, only to have the Athenas rally for a 23-23 tie, Again the Bruins took the lead at 28-25, but again CMS scored three points to tie it 28-28 before the Bruins took the last two points. George Fox led game three early by an 11-3 score and CMS never caught up, though they did pull within a point last at 28-27 before the Bruins secured the match with the final two points.

Panico and Natalie Pickett led the Bruins with 10 kills each, Pickett posting a fine .444 hitting percentage with only two miscues in 18 attempts. Batchelder posted 29 assists, and the Bruins served 10 aces, led by enna Dohren's four. On defense, Batchelder had 20 digs, Panico 13, and Sarah Burkeu 12. Pickett was in on four of the Bruin' seven blocks.

George Fox (5-2) now enters Northwest Conference play, visiting Whitman College Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Whitworth University Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
