TACOMA, Wash. – It did not take the 4th-ranked
University of Puget Sound Loggers long to take control of their
game with the George Fox University Bruins Saturday afternoon here
at Peyton Field at Baker Stadium, striking for a pair of goals in
the first seven minutes en route to a 4-0 win in a Northwest
Conference women's soccer match.
Janece Levien, last year's NWC Offensive Player of the Year
and the leading scorer in the conference again this year, notched
her 16th goal of the season unassisted 5:18 into the
game. Fiona Gornick followed with another
unassisted goal, her fourth of the season, less than two minutes
later at 6:58, giving the Loggers more than enough to secure the
victory.
The Logger defense did its job the rest of the way, limiting the
Bruins to a total of eight shots in the game and only three on
goal. UPS keeper Kallie Wolfer made all three
saves and posted her fifth shutout of the
season.
Puget Sound punched across two more goals late in the second
half. Levien added her 17th goal, again
unassisted, on a shot from 40 yards away at the 74:28 mark, and
Theresa Henle scored her second of the season at 88:32 with an
assist from Molly Winterrowd.
The Loggers took 17 shots in the game, 10 on goal, with Bruin
keeper Sally Page making six saves. UPS also
held a decided advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
George Fox (8-5, NWC 4-5) will try to snap its three-game losing
streak Sunday at home against Lewis & Clark College at 12:00
noon. Puget Sound (12-1, NWC 10-0), which has now won 10 in a
row, is off until next Saturday when Whitman College comes calling
for a 12:00 noon match.
