NEWBERG, Ore. – Exploding for their largest scoring
output of the season against one of the highest-ranked defenses in
the country, the George Fox University Bruins scored early and
often en route to a 5-1 win over the Lewis & Clark College
Pioneers in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match
Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Bruins more than doubled their previous high this season of
two goals in a game, achieved three times. Lewis
& Clark, which was ranked 37th nationally in goals-against
average at 0.61 and had allowed only eight goals all season, three
of them in a 3-1 loss to Linfield, which was the most they had
surrendered in a game before the Bruins' outburst.
The Bruins got on the board early at 3:39 when Nicole Akiu sent a
through ball down the center of the field and Jenny McKinsey
outraced everyone for it, then shot it past keeper Kate MacDougall
for her sixth goal of the season. Kirsten
Cardwell, playing in her first game since missing a pair due to a
hamstring injury, notched her fourth goal when she collected a
loose ball in the middle of the penalty box after a long feed from
Melissa Leighty and sent it into the left corner from 15 yards out
at 14:17.
The Bruins were whistled for an offsides penalty at 23:38 that
negated a scoring header by Anna Russell, but got a legitimate goal
moments later at 24:13 when Corin Kruse scored for the first time
this season. Russell's throw-in from the
right sideline went in the middle of box to Cardwell, who headed it
into the air, and when it came down, Kruse kicked it inside the far
post for a 3-0 George Fox lead which they took into halftime.
Lewis & Clark spoiled the Bruins' bid for a record-tying
ninth shutout of the season at 50:59 in the second half when
Lindsey Whitford hooked a long cross from the right to the far
post, where Stephanie Thurin headed it home for her second goal of
the year.
The Bruins countered with two more goals late in the
period. McKinsey scored her second goal of the
game and seventh of the season when she hit a ball from 15 yards
away on the right side of the box into the far corner off a short
cross from Jasmine Ah Choy at 76:37. Jessica
McMorran closed out the scoring for George Fox when she scored her
first goal of the season off a rebounded shot by Akiu which was
deflected but not controlled by MacDougall.
The Bruins out-shot the Pioneers 19-9 overall and 11-5 in shots on
goal, while the teams were even in corner kicks with two
apiece. MacDougall made six saves for the Pios,
while Sally Page had three saves and Autumn Van Meter one for the
Bruins while working the last five minutes of the game, her first
appearance of the season.
George Fox (9-5, NWC 5-5) visits Pacific University Wednesday for
a 4:00 p.m. contest. Lewis & Clark (4-6-4,
NWC 3-6-1) hosts Linfield College Saturday at 12:00 noon.
