NEWBERG, Ore. – Closing in on the team record for
shutouts in a season, the George Fox University Bruins notched
their seventh whitewash of 2008 with their third straight 1-0
victory, this one over the Linfield College Wildcats in a Northwest
Conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at
Morse Field.
With just over the half the season remaining, the Bruins are only
two away for their single-season best of nine shutouts in
1998. George Fox keeper Sally Page earned her
sixth shutout (freshman Becka Doyle has the other one) by making
eights saves to keep the Wildcats at bay. The
Bruins' record for shutouts in a season by a keeper is nine
in 1998 by Meghan Gibson.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Bruins get only two
shots on goal and the Wildcats just four, the home team finally
broke through in the 61st minute for the only score of the
game. Forward Jenny McKinsey drove down near the
right baseline, turned inside, and fed midfielder Kirsten Cardwell
coming in toward the near post. Cardwell took
the past, skirted a defender and, as Wildcat keeper Kelsey
Hasselblad came out to defend, shot the ball into the far left
corner from 15 yards out for her third goal of the year at 61:27.
Linfield finished with 14 shots, eight on goal.
The Wildcats' best chance to score came four minutes before
Cardwell nailed the winner when Steph Caster angled a shot from the
left side of the penalty box past Page that hit the far post but
bounced out instead of in. George Fox took 17
shots, seven on goal, with Hasselblad making six
saves. The Bruins held a 5-3 advantage in
corners.
