McMINNVILLE, Ore. -
A pair of goals by midfielder Molly Schaefer, one in each half, was
enough to boost George Fox University by Yamhill County rival
Linfield College as the Bruins hung on for a 2-1 win over the
Wildcats in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match
Saturday here at the Linfield Soccer Field.
Schaefer put the Bruins on the board late in the first half when
she scored her third goal of the season unassisted at
41:31. Picking up the ball at the top of the
18-yard box, she placed a shot into the far post, beating a diving
Kelsey Hasselblad for her third goal of the
season.
In the second period, Schaefer raised the GFU lead to 2-0 with her
fourth goal of the year at 57:11. After receiving a pass from Jenny
McKinsey, she broke through the middle of the Wildcat defense to
take Hasselblad one-on-one, and while the Linfield keeper was able
to get a hand on the shot, she was unable to keep it out of the
net.
From that point on the Bruins, playing without starting sweeper
Melissa Leighty who broke her collarbone last weekend at Whitman,
went into a defensive mode. The Wildcats
peppered the net with 15 second-half shots and out-shot the Bruins
21-10 in the game, but the visitors were able to thwart all but one
shot, with keeper Sally Page making a career-high 12 saves.
Linfield also held an 8-3 advantage in corner
kicks. Hasselblad finished with five saves.
Linfield managed to foil what would have been a single-season
George Fox record-high nine shutouts 15 minutes from the end when
Emma Triplett scored with an assist from Kelli Gillespie, but the
Wildcats were unable to get a tying goal before time expired.
George Fox (11-6, NWC 7-6) will try to match last year's win
total of 12, the most in coach Any Hetherington's six-plus
years with the Bruins, Sunday at 11:00 a.m. against Pacific
Lutheran University in the Bruins' final home game of the
season. Linfield (5-12, NWC 3-10) hosts the
6th-ranked University of Puget Sound Sunday, also at 11:00
a.m. Both matches will be followed by
men's NWC games at 1:30 p.m.
