WHITMAN 1, GEORGE FOX 0: Bruins Finish 5th in NWC after Loss to Missionaries

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Kristin Innes headed home her first goal of the season midway through the second half, propelling the Whitman College Missionaries to a season-ending 1-0 victory over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the Whitman Athletic Fields.


After a scoreless first half, the Missionaries tallied the game's only goal after a Corina Gabbert free kick from just outside the 18-yard box bounced off the crossbar.  Innes was at the front of the goal mouth to head home the rebound at the 72:34 mark.


Whitman keeper Courtney Porter made two saves to post her eighth shutout of the season, which ties her for the most in the NWC this season.  Sally Page, who has seven shutout s of her own this fall, made three stops in goal for George Fox.

   

The Missionaries outshot the Bruins 18-6 on the day, which included a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bruins had more corner kick opportunities, however, 7-3.   


George Fox wrapped up its fall campaign with an overall record of 12-8, tying the mark for most wins in a season during seven years under head coach Andy Hetherington, and 8-8 in the conference, finishing fifth in the league standings. Whitman ended its season with an 11-7-1 record, including a 9-6-1 mark and fourth-place finish in the conference.
