NEWBERG, Ore. – Fiona Gornick scored the only goal
of the game in the 28th minute of the first half, giving the
13th-ranked University of Puget Sound Loggers a 1-0 win over the
George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference
women's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The first half was a defensive struggle as the Loggers had eight
shots, two on goal, while the Bruins managed six shots, four on
goal. Puget Sound capitalized on one of their
opportunities when Ryne Olson raced down the right sideline with
the ball, then crossed to Gornick near the right corner of the
penalty box, and she angled a shot into the far corner of the net
when Bruin keeper Sally Page stepped out to challenge the
shot. It was Gornick's second goal of the
season.
The Loggers controlled play for the most part in the second half,
taking 14 shots to four for the Bruins (six on goal to two), and
had nine corner kicks to none for GFU in the period, but neither
team could punch home another goal. Page
finished with six saves for George Fox, while Kallie Wolfer made
six saves for Puget Sound in recording the shutout.
