COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After handing the University of Texas-Dallas Comets their first loss of the new season by a 3-1 score, the George Fox University Bruins in turn suffered their first setback of the year as the host Colorado College Tigers swept them 3-0 on the first day of the Molten-Colorado College Women's Volleyball Tournament Friday here at Reid Gymnasium.


The Bruins, who opened the season by going 4-0 in their own Bruin-Wildcat Invitational last weekend, posted a 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 over Texas-Dallas, dropping the Comets to 5-1.  Colorado College then made the Bruins 5-1, also the Tigers' record, with a 25-21, 25-18, 26-24 win.


Jennifer Panico and Lyndsay Hovee were the big hitters for the Bruins in their opening win, collecting 14 and 13 kills respectively.  Panico had a .346 attack percentage, and Hovee added a match-high 16 digs on defense.  Splitting the setting duties, Ali Lefebvre had 17 assists and Lani Rasmussen had 11, while Lefebvre also contributed 11 digs.  The Bruins out-hit the Comets .159 to .119, had 69 digs to 58, and made seven blocks to three.


Amber Wetz paced the Comets with 14 kills and Kyleigh Irish added 10.  Niki Calverly had 40 assists, and Calverly and Wetz had 13 digs each.


In the match against Colorado College, the Bruins were within a point of the lead late in both sets one and three before falling, while the Tigers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in set two and never looked back.  Offensive efficiency was the story of the match as the Bruins hit only .080, committing 21 attack errors against 29 kills, while the Tigers hit .233 with only 16 errors to 40 kills.


Hovee again led the Bruins with nine kills, hitting .273, and 12 digs, and Panico added seven kills.  Rasmussen and Lefebvre had 11 and 10 assists each.


Anna Clithero with 10 kills and Emily Perkins with nine topped the Tigers.  Amy Schornack and Annie Bernacchi had 21 and 13 assists respectively.


The tournament continues Saturday, with George Fox meeting the University of Wisconsin-Stout at 12:00 noon following a match between Colorado College and Texas-Dallas.  UWS lost both of its Friday matches by 3-0 scores to Texas-Dallas and Colorado College.  The third-place match is at 2:00 p.m. and the championship match is at 4:00 p.m.  (All times listed are Pacific Time; add one hour for Mountain Time).
