NEWBERG, Ore. – Garold Howe posted a double-double
with 21 points and 14 rebounds, leading the visiting Pacific
University Boxers to a 76-66 win over the George Fox University
Bruins in a battle of teams seeking their first Northwest
Conference men's basketball victory of the season Tuesday
night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
After Todd Hinderman's rebound basket gave the Boxers an
early 2-0 lead, the Bruins took their only lead of the game on
back-to-back layups by Alex Stockner and Travis
Toedtemeier. Carter Jordan's jumper and a
three-pointer by Micah Mooney gave the Boxers the lead for good at
7-4 with 16:49 left in the half, but the Bruins hung around for
most of the period, thanks to a 5-5 half and 10 points from Bryan
O'Connell off the bench. The Bruins were
down only one at 27-26 after a Dan Lingenfelder three with three
minutes left, but A.J. Gaulton canned a pair of threes, the last
one at the buzzer, around a layup by Howe to close out the period,
giving the Boxers a nine-point advantage of 35-26.
Pacific picked up in the second half where it left off at the end
of the first, scoring the first two goals of the second half on a
pair of jumpers by Howe, and the visitors kept a double-digit lead
throughout most of the final 20 minutes.
Pacific's largest lead was 17 points when Hinderman scored to
make it 68-51 with 3:26 remaining. The Bruins
closed within eight at 74-66 with 28 seconds left on a three by
Stockner, but that was as close as they would
get.
Stockner and O'Connell each had 16 points for the Bruins,
O'Connell finishing 8-10 from the floor.
Stockner just missed a double-double with nine
rebounds. Jack Martin passed out eight assists
and Joe Ahn had five. The Bruins actually
out-scored the Boxers in field goals (27-26), but the Boxers
doubled the Bruins in three-pointers (8-4) and in free throws made
(16-8).
In addition to Howe's big game, Gaulton scored 14 points,
Carter 12, Hinderman 11, and Mooney 10. Carter
handed out five assists. The Boxers won the
battle of the boards, 38-31.

College Saturday, while Pacific (6-6, NWC 1-3) welcomes Willamette
University Friday. Both games are at 8:00
