NEWBERG, Ore. – Led by Bo Gregg's 18
first-half points, all on six three-pointers with nary a miss, the
Whitworth University Pirates opened up a double-digit lead late in
the period and rolled to an 83-67 win over the George Fox
University Bruins as the second half of the Northwest Conference
men's basketball schedule commenced Friday night here at the
Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
The game was tight through the first 12 minutes as neither team
could mount more than a four-point lead. George
Fox held that margin at 11-7 when Brady Strutz nailed a three from
the top of the key at the 15:47 mark. There were
five ties during that time as well.
Gregg came off the Pirate bench to sink his first three of the
half with eight minutes remaining, boosting Whitworth to a
five-point lead of 21-16. He hit two more in the
next four minutes to keep the Pirates ahead, but the Bruins stayed
close behind a couple of treys of their own from Alex
Stockner. A Grant Vahalla jumper brought the
Bruins within six at 34-28 with 3:19 left, but the Pirates took off
on a 13-3 run to close the period with a 47-31 lead, Gregg canning
three more from behind the arc to fuel the outburst.
Whitworth finished the half hitting .567 (17-30) from the field,
including .667 (8-12) from downtown. In addition
to Gregg's output, Calvin Jurich had 11 points on 5-5
shooting. George Fox shot .429 (12-28), and hit
.500 (6-12) on threes, with Stockner's 10 points leading the
way.
The second half was fought to a standstill as each team scored 36
points in the final 20 minutes. The
Pirates' lead fluctuated between 13 and 22 points the entire
period, their largest lead coming on a pair of Tim Sellereit free
throws that made it 68-46 with 9:18 remaining.
Stockner paced the Bruins with 16 points whole Jack Martin added
10, and each pulled down a team-leading six
rebounds. Steve Campbell had nine points while
not missing a shot, hitting 2-2 from the field with one
three-pointer and 4-4 from the line. Martin
handed out eight assists.
Gregg, who missed his only shot (a two-pointer) in the second
half, had a game-high 18 points. Jurich, who a
had a triple-double the first time the two teams met on Jan. 2, had
only a double-double this time with 17 points and 11 boards as the
Pirates owned the glass 36-30. Ross Nakamura
added 14 points, and David Riley had 11 points and six assists.
George Fox (6-12, NWC 2-7) next hosts Whitman College while
Whitworth (14-4, NWC 6-3) visits Pacific University Saturday, both
games tipping off at 6:00 p.m. NWC women's
games will precede the men's games at 4:00 p.m.
