NEWBERG, Ore. - Demonstrating the
sometimes-bizarre nature of soccer, George Fox University out-shot
Lewis & Clark College by a huge 35-5 margin and managed only
one goal, but that was just enough for the Bruins to nip the
visiting Pioneers 1-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer
match Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Controlling the game virtually from the opening whistle, the
Bruins launched 13 shots, six on goal, before the Pioneers were
able to take even one shot some 20 minutes into the contest.
The Bruins finally punched the ball in on their 15th shot of the
first half at the 35:34 mark. Jenny McKinsey crossed from the
left sideline to Erin Moriki near the right corner of the penalty
box, and Moriki sent the ball back into the middle, where it
rattled around for a few moments before Kaitlyn
Peer secured it and sent it inside the left post for her
third goal of the season.
The Bruins held a 15-3 advantage in shots in the first half, and
upped that to a 20-2 margin in the second half. McKinsey took
over half the Bruins' shots with 18 attempts, nine on goal.
The shots on goal differential was 16-4 and the corner kick
advantage was 11-2 for the Bruins, but they could never push any
more shots across as Lewis & Clark keeper Elise Delgado
collected 14 saves. Becka Doyle stopped all four of the Pios'
shots on goal in recording the shutout win, her second whitewash
and third victory overall of the season.
George Fox (5-4, NWC 2-3) visits the University of Puget Sound,
ranked No. 1 in the country in the d3soccer.com poll and No. 2 in
the NSCAA/adidas poll at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference,
Sunday for a 12:00 noon game. Lewis & Clark (2-4-3, NWC
1-4) hosts Pacific University Sunday, also at 12:00 noon.
