Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Building a 22-point first-half
lead with two big scoring streaks, the George Fox University Bruins
defeated their third straight Cascade Collegiate Conference women's
basketball opponent with an 82-64 victory over the Oregon Institute
of Technology Owls Sunday afternoon here at the Wheeler Sports
Center's Miller Gym.
With the win, George Fox improved to 3-0 and won its 35th game
in a row counting last year's perfect 32-0 and NCAA Division III
national championship season. The Bruins opened this season
with wins over the CCC's Corban College and Concordia
University-Portland. Oregon Tech fell to 3-5.
Nicole Morgan gave the Owls a 3-0 lead before the Bruins reeled
off 11 unanswered points on a rebound basket by Elise Kuenzi and
two free throws, a three-pointer and a layup by Arianna
Mohsenian. After Kellie Morey broke the streak with a three
for the Owls, the Bruins ran off 13 points in a row on a three by
Kuenzi, two treys by Keisha Gordon, and
consecutive layups by Hannah Munger, making it 24-6 with 13:18 left
in the half.
Tech got back in the game with a 15-5 run over the next seven
minutes, Kelsey New fueling the rally with a pair of three-pointers
that pulled the Owls within eight at 29-21. The Bruins
regained control with another string of eight straight points, B.B.
Gardner and Gordon sandwiching layups around a three by Lindsay
Keener, and built up a 44-22 halftime lead on a Munger free throw
with six seconds left.
A three by Lisa Busch and layup by Brittany Cheery brought the
Owls back within 17 at 44-27 to start the second half, but that was
as close as the visitors would get. Over the next 10 minutes,
the Bruins out-scored the Owls 19-4 for a 32-point lead of
63-31. An 11-4 run in the final three minutes of the game
enabled Tech to close the gap somewhat.
Gordon with 14 points and eight rebounds and Kuenzi with 13
points and seven boards led the Bruins, who got scoring out of 12
of their 13 players. Carly Towne and Hannah Munger just
missed double figures with nine points each. Kuenzi also had
five assists. Kuenzi, Gordon, and Gardner had three steals
each as the Bruins forced 22 Tech turnovers while committing only
13 themselves.
New topped the Owls with 14 points, Aundrea Albright added 12,
and Cherry picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10
rebounds. Morey passed out four assists.
NOTES: George Fox heads for southern California
for two games during the Thanksgiving holidays. On Friday,
the Bruins will meet Chapman University at 6:00 p.m. in a game to
be played at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
On Sunday, they will play Cal Lutheran at 4:00 p.m. ... George Fox
defeated Chapman twice in Newberg last season, beating the Panthers
82-52 in a regular season game in December and 83-40 in the second
round of the national tournament ... Oregon Tech plays Saturday at
12:00 noon at home against California Maritime Academy.
