McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Rennika
Doty lofted home a shot from 30 yards away in the second overtime
period, giving the Linfield College Wildcats a stunning 3-2 victory
over the visiting George Fox University Bruins in Northwest
Conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon here at the
Linfield soccer field.
George Fox dropped to 7-12 overall and 4-11 in league play, while
Linfield improved to 10-8-1 overall and 7-7-1 in the
conference. The Wildcats secured their first winning season
since 2002.
Wildcat forward Anna Sours netted the game's first goal, sending
a high-arcing shot over the outstretched hands of Bruin goalkeeper
Becka Doyle at the 27:38 mark of the first half. Almost six
minutes later, the Wildcats earned a 2-0 halftime lead as MacKenzie
Doty set up Rachel Miles with a lob pass, and Miles eluded Doyle to
pound in a shot at the 33:18 mark.
George Fox cut the margin to 2-1 just three minutes into the second
half as Esther Harder collected a feed from Kirsten Cardwell and
pushed the ball past Wildcat netminder Kelsey Hasselblad for her
third goal of the season. Less than a minute later, the
Bruins tied the match on Jordan Haselnus's shot
from 10 yards away, with Cardwell again assisting on the
play. It was the second score of the season for Haselnus.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to take the lead with 16 minutes
remaining in regulation, but MacKenzie Doty's header off a free
kick bounded high over the crossbar. Rennika Doty watched another
near miss go awry with two minutes remaining when she failed to
plant a header in the net from five yards out.
After one scoreless overtime that saw each team get two shots, the
Bruins nearly ended the match four minutes into the second overtime
but Haselnus's hard shot careened off the left post. Three
minutes later, Doty sent in her game-winner from long range.
Shots on goal favored George Fox 12-5, but Linfield held a 5-2
advantage in corner kicks. Doyle made two saves for the
Bruins, while Hasselblad had to make 10 as the Bruins kept the
pressure on but could not punch across a winner.
Both teams close out their seasons Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
George Fox hosts Pacific Lutheran University and will say farewells
to seniors Kayla Corn and Jenny McKinsey. Linfield visits the
4th-ranked University of Puget Sound, which clinched the NWC title
and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament
Friday with a 2-0 win over Pacific University.
