BEAVERTON, Ore. – In a match that was moved to the
Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton due to wet courts on
their Newberg campus, the George Fox University Bruins dropped
their 2009 men's tennis opener 9-0 to the visiting Whitworth
University Pirates here Friday afternoon.
With only three returning letterwinners, the Bruins were at a
disadvantage against a more experienced Pirate team that has only
one freshman. In the doubles matches, Ralf
Schulz and Bruin freshman Stefan Lagielski lost to the
Pirates' Michael Shelton and Joe Wales 8-1; Nick Jenness and
rookie Scott Barnett fell to Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams 8-5;
and two GFU newcomers, Ross Budreau and Garrett Thompson, were
ousted by Kellen Oetgen and Colin Barrett 8-2.
In singles, it was Skelton over Lagielski 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1; Wales
over Barnett 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2; Zalewski over Jenness 6-0, 6-4 at
No. 3; Williams over Schulz 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4; Barrett over Budreau
6-2, 6-1 at No. 5; and Oetgen over Thompson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox (0-1, NWC 0-1) returns to action Saturday, hosting
Pacific Lutheran University at 2:00 p.m. If the
weather is bad, the match will be moved to Tualatin Hills at 4:00
p.m. Whitworth (2-2, NWC 2-1) goes to Lewis
& Clark College Saturday for a 10:00 a.m. match.
