LEWIS & CLARK 7, GEORGE FOX 2: Pioneers Pick Up First Win over Bruins' Depleted Lineup

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore.
– Short-handed for a second straight match by illness that has sidelined half the team, the George Fox University Bruins fell 7-2 to the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in  a Northwest Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.

With only four able-bodied players available, the Bruins were forced to default the No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles to start the match, just as they had the day before at Linfield College, putting them in a hole from which they were unable to extricate themselves.

The teams split the two doubles matches that were played.  The Pios' Vincent Groot and Peter Ray prevailed at No. 1 doubles 8-6 over the Bruins' Stefan Lagielski and Ralf Schulz, but the Bruins bounced back to take the No. 2 doubles as Scott Barnett and Ross Budreau teamed up to dispatch Luke Wheeler and Matthias Kullowatz 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Bruins and Pios also split two matches that split sets.  At No. 1 singles, Groot prevailed over Barnett 6-3, 4-6, (10-3), while the Bruins picked up a point at No.3 when Schulz edged Ray 6-3, 2-6, (10-8).  The Pioneers captured the match, however, their first victory of the season, when they won at No. 2, Wheeler downing Lagielski 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 4, Andrew Moller taking care of Budreau 6-1, 6-0.

George Fox (0-7, NWC 0-7) next hosts the University of Puget Sound Friday at 2:00 p.m.  Lewis & Clark (1-6, NWC 1-4) visits Willamette University Sunday for a 10:30 a.m. match.
