University Bruins dropped a 63-49 defensive struggle to the
visiting Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in Northwest Conference
men's basketball action Friday night here at the Wheeler
Sports Center's Miller Gym.
Alex Stockner scored the first basket of the game for the Bruins,
but the Pios answered with a 10-0 run in a five-minute span to go
up 10-2 with 14:36 remaining. The Bruins battled
back within two points four times before the half ended, pulling
within 26-24 at the break when Stockner canned a layup with 28
seconds left.
A free throw by Bryan O'Connell and a jumper by Stockner
gave George Fox a 27-26 lead just over a minute into the second
half. The teams then fought on even terms for
the next four minutes, the Bruins tying it for the last time at
32-32 on a Stockner free throw at the 15:19
mark. P.J. Taylor drove for a layup to break the
tie at 14:28, igniting a 9-0 Pioneer run that made it 41-32 with
just under10 minutes left.
The Bruins finally broke a five-minute scoring drought with a
layup by Bryan O'Connell, but Drake Green canned a
three-pointer with 9:10 to go to give Lewis & Clark its first
10-point lead of 44-34, and the Bruins only once got within nine
the rest of the game. Back-to-back threes by
Kyle Meeuwsen and Green boosted the Pios to their largest lead of
16 points at 55-39 with five minutes to play.
George Fox shot only .340 from the field (17-50) and a meager .176
from three-point range (3-17), but Lewis & Clark was not
significantly better, making only .364 (20-55) on field goals and
.389 (7-18) on threes, though they were 6-10 behind the line in the
second half, enabling them to pull away. The
Bruins held a decided advantage on the backboards 42-32, but offset
that by committing 25 turnovers to 15 for the Pioneers.
