PORTLAND, Ore.
– Despite a late change in venue and time, the
nationally-ranked Whitman College Missionaries remained unbowed in
Northwest Conference men's tennis play as they downed the
George Fox University Bruins 9-0 Tuesday morning here at Lewis
& Clark College's Tennis Bubble.
The match had been originally
scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the GFU campus courts, but due to rain
in the area, the host Bruins were forced to look elsewhere, and the
Lewis & Clark facility was the only one available and only at
9:00 a.m. Undeterred, the Missionaries, ranked
21st in the NCAA Division III and 5th in the West Region, swept the
Bruins, but had to go to third-set tiebreakers in the top two
singles to do so.
In doubles, Whitman picked up wins
as Adriel Borshansky and Jasper Follows defeated the Bruins'
Stefan Lagielski and Nick Jenness 8-4 at No. 1, Conor Holten-Burke
and Thomas Roston knocked off Scott Barnett and Ross Budreau 8-3 at
No. 2, and David Deming and Jake Cappel downed Garrett Thompson and
Scott Porter 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles, Cappel and Barnett split
at No. 1, Cappel taking the first set 6-3 and Barnett the second
6-3, before Cappel won a 10-6 third-set
tiebreaker. The same thing happened at No. 2 as
Lagielski took the opening set 6-4 for the Bruins before the
Missionaries' Borshansky bounced back to take the second 6-1,
then posted a 10-6 win in the third-set tiebreaker.
Whitman cruised through the rest of
the matches as Follows dropped Jenness 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3; Roston
blanked Budreau 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; Holten-Burke halted Thompson
6-0, 6-0 at No. 5; and Deming downed Porter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
George Fox (1-12,
NWC 0-12) is off until the end of spring break, not playing again
until Saturday, March 28, when the Bruins visit Lewis & Clark
for an 11:00 a.m. match. Whitman (10-2, NWC 10-0) is
back in action Wednesday, playing at Willamette University at 11:00
a.m. and at Lewis & Clark at 4:00 p.m.
