BEAVERTON, Ore.
– Closing out the home portion of their 2009 men's
tennis season with yet another “home-away-from-home”
match, the George Fox University Bruins fell 9-0 to the Linfield
College Wildcats in Northwest Conference competition Wednesday here
at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center after wet grounds on the GFU
campus courts had forced a day's postponement.
The Wildcats picked up doubles wins as Nick Ruess and Matt
Kauffman defeated the Bruins' Stefan Lagielski and Nick
Jenness 8-3 at No. 1 and Tal DeWitt and Matt Levering downed Scott
Barnett and Ross Budreau 8-1 at No. 2. The
Bruins forfeited the third doubles match as only five players were
available to play Wednesday.
In singles, Linfield's Mark Magdaong defeated Barnett 6-1,
6-2 at No. 1; Ruess got past Lagielski 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 2;
DeWitt downed Jenness 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Levering topped Budreau
6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Matt Kauffman blanked
Garrett Thompson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Luke Rembold
picked up a default victory at No. 6 for the Wildcats.
George Fox (1-14, NWC 0-14) concludes its season with road matches
this weekend at the University of Puget Sound on Friday at 3:00
p.m. and at Willamette University on Saturday at 11:00
a.m. Linfield (11-6, NWC 10-3) hosts Whitworth
University Saturday at 10:00 a.m. before entertaining Lewis-Clark
State College in a non-conference match later in the day at 3:00
p.m.
