PORTLAND, Ore. – A pair of second-half
goals by Lewis & Clark College put an end to the George Fox
University Bruins' record start to the season and their
string of consecutive shutouts as the Pioneers took a 2-0 victory
in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams Friday night here
at Griswold Stadium.
The Pioneers and Bruins entered the game as two of only nine teams
in the NCAA Division III that had not surrendered a goal this
season. The Bruins' four straight shutouts
was a new school record, but their scoreless streak ended at 429
minutes when the Pioneers' Aly Robinson took a shot from 20 yards
out that sailed over George Fox goalkeeper Sally Page into the
upper right corner of the net at 69:42.
The Pios added an insurance goal nine minutes later when Brittany
Larson connected on a feed from Rebecca Conroy.
Page initially stopped the shot, but got tied up with Larson in
trying to make the save outside the goal and fell down, leaving the
Pioneer player a clear shot at the goal.
Page made five saves for George Fox, while Lewis & Clark
keeper Kate MacDougall earned her fifth shutout of the season by
stopping seven Bruin shots on goal. The Pioneers
out-shot the Bruins 9-8 in total shots, and have yet to allow a
goal in 504 minutes this season.
With the loss, the Bruins fell to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the
conference as their record string of four wins to start a season
came to an end. The Pioneers are now 2-0-3
overall and 1-0 in the league.
Both teams are back in action Sunday at 12:00 noon. George
Fox will host the 13th-ranked University of Puget Sound while Lewis
& Clark will entertain Pacific University.
The GFU-UPS match will be followed at 2:30 p.m. by the men's
NWC contest.
