GEORGE FOX 3, NW CHRISTIAN 0: Bruins Block Beacons to Return to Wins Column

Box Score

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. - Breaking out of their modest two-game losing streak, the George Fox University Bruins returned to the win column with a good defensive effort as they knocked off the Northwest Christian University Beacons 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-20) in a non-conference women's volleyball match Saturday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.

The Bruins cruised to victory in the opening set by hitting a powerful .345 with 12 kills and only two errors while holding the Beacons to a minus-.031 percentage.  George Fox took a quick 5-1 lead and never looked back, remaining comfortably ahead throughout the game.  Lyndsay Hovee paced the Bruin attack with four kills and no errors for a .400 percentage.

After twice taking five-point leads in set two of 12-7 and 13-8, the Bruins saw the Beacons overtake them with a 5-0 run that turned a 17-15 George Fox lead into a 20-17 Northwest Christian advantage.  Trailing 24-21, the Bruins rallied to tie it on a Beacon service error and back-to-back blocks by Sarah Crossfield and Kaitlyn Maddams.  A kill by Lindsey Young again gave the Beacons a potential set point, but the Bruins responded with a kill by Hovee, a block by Hovee and Maddams, and an ace by Lani Rasmussen for the win.

George Fox jumped ahead 8-2 at the beginning of set three and remained in front, though the Beacons did close within two points at 12-10 midway through the set after consecutive kills by Cassie Bishop.  A kill by Eliza Pledger prevented the Beacons from getting closer, and the Bruins stayed three to five points ahead the rest of the way before a block by Pledger closed out the set and the match.  Although they hit only .000 themselves in the final set, the Bruins again held the Beacons to a negative attack mark of minus-.029.

For the game, George Fox hit .144 (33 kills and 17 errors) to only .036 (30 kills and 26 errors) for Northwest Christian.  The Bruins made 48 digs and had nine blocks, while the Beacons had 49 digs and three blocks.

Hovee paced the Bruins with 11 kills, hitting .333.  Ali Toedtemeier passed out 18 assists and Rasmussen 11.  Jenna Dohren had 11 digs, while Pledger was in on five blocks and Maddams four to lead the defense.

Bishop was the only Beacon in double figures in kills with 12.  Whitney Hoff and Taylor Hatleberg had 14 and 12 assists respectively.  Mercedes LeClaire made 13 digs and Emily Miller 11.

George Fox (6-3) plays its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at home against Corban College at 7:00 p.m.  Northwest Christian (3-9) hosts Simpson University of California Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., also in a non-league game.
