NEWBERG, Ore. - Striking early and often, the
George Fox University Bruins built a huge halftime lead and cruised
to an 8-1 win over the Northwest Christian University Beacons in
their season-opening non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday
afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Bruins scored 32 seconds into the contest when freshman
Esther Harder took a pass from senior Jenny McKinsey and sent it
inside the near post from 10 yards out on the right side of the
keeper's box for a quick 1-0 lead. Harder assisted on a
straight-on goal from 10 yards away by junior Kirsten Cardwell six
minutes later, and the Bruins never looked back.
McKinsey added goals at 14:45 and 19:42 with assists from
Cardwell and freshman Jordan Haselnus, and rookie Katelyn Peer
notched her first college goal at 28:41 on a penalty kick after
being fouled in the box. The Bruins took a 5-0 lead into the
break.
Peer scored again a minute-and-a-half into the second period
with a breakaway goal after athrough ball from Shelby Klein
to make it 6-0. The potential shutout was ruined when the
Beacons scored on a penalty kick taken by Kara Nelson after Karli
Vath was fouled in the penalty area.
George Fox closed out the scoring with goals by Haselnus from 15
yards out after a feed from freshman Kasssi Vanderkwaak at the
74:34 mark, and Vanderkwaak picked up a goal at 87:35 from five
yards away. McKinsey assisted on the last goal, giving her 17
assists in her career at George Fox, one shot of Karli Holub's
career record of 18.
Autumn Van Meter went the distance in goal to pick up the win
for the Bruins, collecting one save. The Bruins held the
Beacons to seven shots in all and only two on goal while taking 32
of their own, 21 on goal. Calie McVicker had seven saves in
the first half while taking the loss for the Beacons, and Sarah
Leonard had six saves in the second half. Northwest Christian
had more corners, 6-5, while the Bruins were whistled for 11
offsides penalties to just one for the Beacons.
George Fox (1-0) hosts Warner Pacific College Wednesday, Sept.
9, at 5:00 p.m. in a makeup of a game that was postponed from Aug.
29. Northwest Christian (1-3) hosts Linfield College Saturday
at 7:00 p.m.
