Box Score
SPOKANE, Wash. - Sidonia Davin
scored her second goal of the season and the Whitworth University
defense made it stand up as the Pirates defeated visiting George
Fox University 1-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match
on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the NWC, while
the Bruins, who suffered their fourth straight setback, all on the
road, dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Whitworth picked up the only score of the game when Elizabeth
Mattila drove into the box and drew the George Fox defense to her,
then passed to a wide-open Davin, who finished in the 21st
minute. The Pirates had numerous other opportunities to score
against the Bruins, but could not get an insurance goal.
George Fox keeper Becka Doyle made four save as Whitworth held a
shot advantage of 18-2, including a 5-0 edge in shots-on-goal.
Pirate keeper Krista Dietz did not have to make a save to earn the
shutout as Whitworth's defensive back line, anchored by center-back
Anisa Babar, cut off any attack the Bruins tried to bring inside.
The Bruins' only shot attempt of the second half came from
outside the box on a free kick, and the attempt was high.
George Fox plays its first home conference game next Sunday
against Willamette University at 12:00 noon. Whitworth hits
the road for a match with the University of Puget Sound, ranked No.
2 nationally, Saturday at 12:00 noon.
