WALLA WALLA, Wash. - A dominating performance
in doubles carried over into the singles matches as the
nationally-ranked Whitman College Missionaries blanked the George
Fox University Bruins 9-0 without losing a set in Northwest
Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon here in the
Bratton Tennis Center.
The best battle in the opening set of doubles matches came at
No. 2, where the Bruins' Scott Barnett and Nick Jenness inched in
front 3-2 before the Missionaries' Christoph Fuchs and Quin Miller
won six of the next seven games for an 8-4 victory. The
other two matches were all Whitman as Matt Solomon and Etienne
Moshevich rolled to a 8-0 victory at No. 1 against Pedro and Juan
Munoz, and Jasper Follows and Jeff Tolman went up 7-0 before
defeating Josh Williford and Matthew Gardner 8-1 at No. 3.
The top four matches in singles were played on the BTC's four
indoor courts. In the featured match at No. 1, Solomon
overcame some early resistance en route to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over
Barnett; Moshevich was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Pedro Munoz at No. 2;
Tolman survived a second-set test for a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Juan
Munoz at No. 3; and Chris Bailey posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Jenness.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles were played on the Whitman outdoor
courts in sunny yet chilly conditions. Follows won 6-0, 6-0 at No.
6, beating Chris Schoon, and it was Fuchs dispatching Gardner 6-2,
6-2 at No. 5.
George Fox slipped to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the
conference. Whitman, which is ranked 26th nationally and 6th
in the NCAA Division III West Region, improved to 4-1 overall and
3-0 in the league.
The Bruins return to action Friday, hosting the University of
Puget Sound in a conference match at 2:00 p.m. The
Missionaries, who have won 53 consecutive NWC regular season
matches dating back to the spring of 2006 and are the two-time
defending NWC champions, are off until March 6, when they will host
Willamette University.
