LA MIRADA, Calif. - Despite an
8-1 loss to the Biola University Eagles of the NAIA's
Division I at the Biola courts here Tuesday afternoon, the George
Fox University Bruins finished their four-match men's tennis
swing through southern California with a 2-2 split, their most
successful spring break trip in several years.
After opening their journey with 9-0 victories over La Sierra
University and Hope International University, the Bruins dropped a
6-3 decision at Chapman University before facing Biola.
George Fox is now 5-10 overall, while Biola improves to 5-9.
Biola took all three doubles matches to open play as Weston
Leopold and Brent Worthington edged Juan and Pedro
Munoz of George Fox 9-7 at No. 1, David Mossman and Dan
Westman topped Scott Barnett and Nick Jenness 8-3 at No. 2, and
Ryan Adams and Nicholas Lazar defeated Matthew Gardner and Luke
Pritchard 8-3 at No. 3.
The Bruins picked up their only point of the match at No. 3
singles, where Juan Munoz bested Worthington 6-2, 7-5. The
rest of the day belong to the Eagles as Leopold downed Barnett 6-2,
6-0 at No. 1; Mossman dropped Jenness 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Westman
beat Gardner 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4; Chris Anderson toppled Pritchard
6-3, 6-2 at No. 5; and Adams knocked off Chris Schoon 6-2, 7-5 at
No. 6.
George Fox returns to Northwest Conference play this weekend,
hosting Whitworth University in a pair of matches on Saturday, the
first at 9:00 a.m. and the second at 3:00 p.m. Biola visits
Concordia University-Irvine Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for a Golden
State Athletic Conference clash.
