MTEN: WHITWORTH 9-8, GEORGE FOX 0-1 - Pirates Plunder Bruins Twice in One Day

NEWBERG, Ore. - Playing both of their Northwest Conference regular-season matches against the Whitworth University Pirates on the same day and in the same place, the George Fox University Bruins dropped the morning match 9-0 and the afternoon affair 8-1 Saturday here at the GFU campus courts.

The Bruins' lone victory of the day came in the afternoon match in the No. 2 doubles, as Scott Barnett and Pedro Munoz teamed up for an 8-6 win over the Pirates' Michael Shelton and Colin Zalewski.  The rest of the day belonged to the Pirates.

In the morning contest, which was delayed by an hour in its start to allow the George Fox courts to dry completely, the Pirates opened up with doubles wins by Shelton and Zalewski over Juan Munoz and Nick Jenness 8-4 at No. 1, Cameron Williams and Joe Wales over Barnett and Garrett Thompson 8-4 at No. 2, and Henry Williams and Colin Barrett over Matthew Gardner and Luke Pritchard 8-2 at No. 2.

In singles, it was Shelton over Barnett 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1; Cameron Willams over Jenness 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2; Zalewski over Juan Munoz 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3; Wales over Gardner 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4; Kellen Oetgen over Chris Schoon 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5; and Henry Williams over Thompson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

In the afternoon's action, Whitworth picked up two doubles wins: at No. 1, where Cameron Williams and Wales dispatched Jenness and Juan Munoz 8-6, and at No. 3, where it was Blaine Massey and Micah Spaun over Gardner and Pritchard 8-6.

Whitworth singles wins went to Shelton over Barnett 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1; Cameron Williams over Pedro Munoz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2; Wales over Jenness 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3; Oetgen over Juan Munoz 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 4; Henry Williams over Gardner 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5; and Barrett over Schoon 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.

“I liked the way we battled back and were more competitive in the afternoon,” said George Fox coach Neal Ninteman.  “We had several matches that were close and could have gone either way; this second one could easily have been a 5-4 match for either of us.”

George Fox (5-12, NWC 2-10) goes to Tacoma, Wash., next weekend, playing at Pacific Lutheran University Friday at 2:00 p.m. and at the University of Puget Sound Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  Whitworth (7-11, NWC 7-3) hosts Linfield College Friday at 4:00 p.m. All are conference matches.
