FOREST GROVE, Ore. -
Prevailing in the most closely-contested matches of the afternoon,
the Pacific University Boxers snapped a four-match losing streak by
pulling out a 7-2 victory over the George Fox University Bruins in
Northwest Conference men's tennis action Friday here at the Holce
Tennis Courts.
Breaking what had been their pattern over the last three
matches, the Boxers set themselves up for success by winning a pair
of close doubles matches. Spencer Hing and Michael Okada
survived a tiebreaker to secure a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Pedro
Munoz and Juan Munoz at No. 1, while Eric Furuya and Micah Leo came
out just ahead of Scott Barnett and Nick Jenness
at No. 2, 8-6. George Fox's Matthew Gardner and Luke
Pritchard prevented a Pacific sweep of the doubles, taking an 8-4
decision at No. 3 from Patrick Kinghorn and Scott Kawamura.
The Boxers nailed down the win by taking five of the six singles
matches, coughing up only the No. 1 contest where Barnett knocked
off Okada 6-1, 6-1. For Pacific, Hing was a 6-4, 6-3 winner
over Pedro Munoz at No. 2; Furuya knocked off Juan Munoz 6-3, 6-3
at No. 3; Leo earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jenness at No. 4, and
Hector Alcayde prevailed in the only three-set match of the day,
beating Gardner 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 5. Michael Furuya
returned to action after missing a month with injuries and beat
Pritchard 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 flight.
George Fox dropped its fifth in a row after two season-opening
wins despite giving Pacific a tough time, falling to 2-5 overall
and 1-5 in the conference. The Bruins will visit Linfield
College Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. battle. Pacific (3-6, NWC
2-5) takes to the road Saturday for their only match away from
Forest Grove during the month of March, playing at the University
of Puget Sound at 11 a.m.
