NEWBERG, Ore. - With Audrey Sullivan and Tera
McDonough scoring the first two goals ever in a women's soccer
match at George Fox University's brand-new Austin Sports Complex,
the visiting Corban University Warriors dispatched the
home-standing Bruins 2-0 in a non-conference tilt here on a
rain-soaked Tuesday evening.
The Bruins' first two games on their new field against Northwest
University and Warner Pacific College had ended in 0-0 ties.
The Warriors ended the scoreless drought when Sullivan punched home
a cross from the left baseline by Emily Tsugawa from five yards out
in the 33rd minute of the first half. It was her third goal
of the season.
The Warriors added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute in the
second half Brittany Bowman's cross from the right to the middle of
the box was flicked by Tsugawa to McDonough, who sent her first
score of the season into the left corner of the net from 10 yards
away.
Alyssa Montero
went the distance in goal for George Fox, facing 23 shots in all
and 10 on goal, with seven saves; there was also a team save for
the Bruins. Corban's defense limited the home team to only
three shots all night, two by Kassi Vanderkwaak and
one on goal by Sarah
Brase, a header which was saved by Corban keeper Alexis
Beattie.
It was a cleanly-played game in wet but mudless conditions on
the synthetic-turf field, with only four fouls called on each
team. Corban held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
